A guide to ‘Temp to Perm’ employment – what is it and what are the benefits?
A temporary to permanent position begins with an employee working on a temporary basis but with the opportunity to continue the role in a permanent position if both parties are satisfied. While the position is temporary, the employee will receive regular hours and carry out the same role required for the permanent role.
At Charles Hunter Associates, we offer temporary to permanent roles in the social care sector.
Benefits of a temporary to permanent position
A temporary to permanent position is the perfect opportunity for a candidate to test the waters and see if the role is the right fit for them. They will get an idea of the company culture, management style, the day-to-day tasks and if the hours suit their lifestyle.
If a candidate is looking to change into an industry with little to no experience, a temporary to permanent role can introduce the sector, without the need for long-term commitment.
A candidate can also initially begin working in the role quicker on a temporary to permanent basis. Temporary roles have quicker compliance checks, so a start date can be agreed within 2-3 weeks.
By accepting a temporary to permanent position, a candidate gets the benefits of job security, while still testing if the industry or service is right for them. This can relieve some pressure when job hunting.
Temporary to permanent employees will receive the same induction to the service and will be treated as a part of the team from the beginning.
What does the temporary to permanent process look like?
1) Apply for one of our temporary to permanent positions.
2) One of our consultants will get in touch to discuss the job role and your experience.
3) If you are happy, our consultant will introduce you to the client.
4) The interview process will then begin. It may be multiple stages and involve phone calls, online video calls and in-person interviews. At this stage, the permanent salary and benefits are pre-negotiated.
5) The client will make an offer, which our consultant will relay to you. Negotiations can continue during this period.
6) Once an offer has been accepted, as the agency, we will begin the temporary compliance process. This usually takes around two weeks and this can be done while you are working your notice period and preparing for your new role. Our dedicated and award-winning compliance team will guide you through the whole process.
7) A start date will be confirmed with both parties.
8) You will begin the temporary contract work, which usually lasts between 12 to 16 weeks. During this period, you will have regular contact with your consultant, receive weekly pay through the agency, and have an online rota and continued support. Your dedicated consultant will check in and ask for feedback on how you are finding the role. At this stage, you can pull out if the role isn’t the right fit.
9) Roughly 8 weeks into the temporary contract, the consultant will have a check in with the client. If they are happy to continue with the permanent contract, the permanent compliance will begin and a start date for the new contract will be agreed.
10) The work will continue as before, just under a permanent contract. You will now be on the client's payroll and no longer receive payment and rota via the agency.
11) You can decide if you would like to pick up extra shifts via the agency on the days you are not working your permanent role.
